Welcome to sohamtimes.org

by Sahadev Komaragiri

Hello and welcome to sohamtimes.org(affectivedomain.org since May 11, 2014). My name is Sahadev Komaragiri and I wholeheartedly thank you for visiting my site.  My passion and interests are in spirituality and educare. The most important reason for starting this site is to share my thoughts, learning and knowledge on various topics that I consider are important for sustainable spiritual growth of our future generations.  Your feedback is an important component of my learning and I sincerely appreciate your participation.

The biggest problem with the current education system, as taught in schools in India and around the world, is that it makes men hanker around wealth and not character. The system is completely lacking in the area of value based instruction. The five basic human values of Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love and Non-Violence are not imparted in schools in required measure. This is what is causing a complete degeneration in human character. These are the topics that this site will focus on in the coming months and years under the heading of Educare. I will be tracking the lives of pioneers in the field of Educare.  I will also study and report the progress made by various institutions that have made value based education their primary goal. I have been involved in educare teaching programs for a few years now and my passion for it keeps growing year after year. I will share my experiences in the field of educare.

Like many others, I have been reading Hindu religious books ever since I was in my primary school.  Thanks to the wave of interest generated by Sri. MS Rama Rao, when I was still in my primary school years I was singing verses from Sundarakanda of Ramayana.  During my middle school years, I developed a strong interest in Mahabharata. After all, I was named after Sahadeva who is one of the five heroes in the story of Mahabharat. As I grew up I developed a keen interest in Hindu philosophy and its spiritual discourse.  So, this will be one of the topics I would be reading and writing about under the heading of spirituality.

In the near future, I will be taking up a few projects in the field of Educare. I will be writing about these projects hopefully from inception to all the way up.

As described in the about page, I will limit my writing to just the four areas mentioned on that page. It is my desire to publish an article every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Towards this end, I have already lined up enough articles for next 8-9 weeks.

Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba works tirelessly to promote spirituality, to revive Vedic knowledge, and to spread the understanding and importance of value based education. He is my Hero and my perpetual source of inspiration.  I pray for his guidance and for giving me the necessary energy to make my earthly sojourn a rewarding experience. I sincerely hope you will join me on my journey along this path. Several great men have traversed this path. I can only hope to follow their path and in the process seek gratification from the possibility of justifying my existence on this planet.

Mama,
I wanted to do the same too, but it will take time. I still have to read a lot of articles and other books.

If I may add, “After all, I was named after Sahadeva who is one of the five heroes in the story of Mahabharat”- Karna was equally a hero, so in my opinion Mahabharat had 6 heroes.

Cheers
Sandeep

Bujji,

Wow.. Congratulations. Looking forward to read more. I recently I watched Mahabharat (B.R Chopra’s) again 20 years later. I understood more than before. I mean values.

Best wishes,
Rajyalakshmi

@Pavan: Thanks. I hope to spend most of my free time on building content for this blog. I have a lot of ideas and topics to write about. It is just that I have to apply myself to converting my ideas into writing.
@Sandeep: Thanks. Karna is a hero too, but there are only five pandavas. I checked out your blog.. you got a start buddy.
@Rajakka: Thanks. B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat is good. I also liked Ramanand Sagar’s Krishna and B.R Chopra’s Vishnu Puran.

Dear Sahadev,

This is a great start to journeying further down the path for you as well as those of us that seek to understand and practice spirituality but not strive towards formalizing our learnings and opinions. Sairam Sahadev,
Wonderful to see a friend who is blogging. The modern day parent is stressed not about the child getting an education but rather about if they are on the top ten of the class and to excel in everything. Should they wonder how they fared in school themselves, then the pressure will not be exerted but the love to learn will be initiated and more towards character building. I do not know much about Ramayana and Mahabharath. I only remember , as an 10 year old, waiting eagerly for the weekends as my mom would borrow videos on the abovementioned and let us watch it. To the 10 year old mind, Ravanna and the villain of mahabharath struck out as heros. Didn’t they have steadfast qualities that build a man? Anyway..Iam waiting for your blogs to elucidate me on the sagas of how the character of a man can be nurtured. My random ramblings will always remain a random rambling.:-)

Sairam Shivankari, I am not sure if Ravana and the villains of Mahabharat can be counted as real heroes with values that I can recommend kids to emulate. There might be a few qualities like determination and confidence, but these qualities are overshadowed by all the other negative qualities. My few cents!

Hi Sahadev,
A very interesting site and I agree with you that Indian education system (at least as I knew it) lacks in social and spiritual education. It is my theory that this limited emphasis on humanities-oriented subjects precludes a lot of students from developing critical thinking skills. It is easier to teach critical thinking using mythology or historical events than Physics or Chemistry (as the students have to learn the lingo of these fields first). Also once students develop critical thinking they can extend it STEM (science technology engineering and mathematics) disciplines. Hindu philosophy with its vast body of literature provides a wondeful confluence of contrasting ideas and if imparted correctly can help see the utility of life in more than just monetory units. Congratulations!! your efforts are indeed commendable.

Thanks Venki. It did not occur to me that lack of emphasis on humanities oriented subject negatively effects critical thinking. Great point. As a professor you sure carry unique perspectives on these matters. Thanks for your valuable comments. I look forward to learning from the feedback you provide on this site.
