Harish got up at 6 in the morning. His mother was not at home. She was on a visit to her native place. There was no one to cook breakfast for the morning. His dad was getting ready to go to his office. He has no time to cook anything.

There is a good restaurant nearby. They both decided to get food from this restaurant. Harish said “Naanna, I will have masala dosa today”. Dad announced his preference, “I want two idlis and one vada. Don’t forget sambar!”.

“Okay naanna, I will bring our breakfast right away”. Sounding very excited Harish rushed out of the door.  His dad wanted to say something, but Harish was already out on the street.

This is a short story written for and about children under the short stories section of my blog.. I use these stories in my English Proficiency classes. The words in italics are the words that add to the child’s vocabulary. The questions at the end help them think deeper about the value embedded in the story. I encourage children to perform skits that are based on these stories.

The rates at the restaurant are reasonable. Idlis cost 20 rupees a plate. Masala dosa costs 30 rupees. With some extras total comes to approximately 65 rupees. It was a very busy place with many people. Harish quietly joined the queue and waited for his turn. There are three people ahead of him. Suddenly someone tapped on his shoulder. He turned around to see who it was. He was very surprised to find his dad. His dad had a very naughty smile on his face. Harish was confused. He asked “Naanna, why are you here?” “Did you change your mind? Do you want upma instead of idlis?” His dad did not respond. He handed him a hundred rupee note and went back. Harish just realized that he forgot to carry money to pay for the breakfast items. Harish was very disappointed. He murmured to himself “I am sorry dad”. He felt ashamed of his forgetfulness. His father is a very mature person. He did not say a word about the incident. Harish promised himself that he is going to be more careful in the future.

He will never forget what happened that day!
